According to the Upanishads the Atma is the supreme spirit individualized. Atman is Brahman but eternally individualized and seperate. Every living being has the Atman within. The Atman is connected to the supersoul or the Spirit that dwells everywhere.

The Upanishads show that the Atman is more subtle then the mind and is above the 4 elements and the 5 senses. We can see that the mind is more subtle then the body, the 4 elements are earth, water, air, and fire. The mind would be akin to ether or the 5th element. Atman is still more subtle then the mind but is fluent and everywhere an nowhere similar to air. This Is why in the kabbalistic system Kether the top of the tree of Life is symbolized by air. The air we speak of is spiritual air that resides in counter space. The 4 elements manifest from the is counter space and the soul crystallizes into matter. The enfullgence of the 4 elements come from ether and the ether comes from Bramham.
Brahman is indivisible and shines pure and everlasting. It is said where Brahman is the the Sun does not shine nor, the stars, and the moon nor earth fires do not shine. Brahman is self enefullegent and the radiance of Brahman is the source of all of these lesser lights. In the same way, our souls our individual Atmans are the effect of the supreme spirit that is everlasting and eternal. Brahman causes all of our mamnanifestsiton as well as the material universe but is not subject to the creation.
Brahman is super personal or above personal and impersonal. There have been many arguments in the east as to whether the supreme being is personal or impersonal. Ramakrishna the holy sage of India of the 19th Century said that the father is impersonal and the mother is personal. We know that this world is made of both electricity and magnetism. These two Polarities have a source or a unified knower. That unified Knower is also known as Krishna, Krishna and Brahman are one and the same. Christ and the logos or the supreme universal intelligence is one and the same with Krishna and Brahman. The supreme creator has three different manifestation. One is the personal individualized being where the light comes from, the second is the ienefullgence the omnipotence of the creator this is akin to the light of the sun, So we have the Sun the individualized being and we have the rays of the sun the creator of all things, then we have the personal manifestation of that light centralized in every living being. This is how the supreme spirit is everywhere and also localized in its eternal abode.
By purifying the mind and entering into silence we can contemplate on Brahman the supreme spirit or the substratum of our very existence. This will take us to a state that is beyond the mind and we can know our unlimited nature as children of God. The upanishads carry the same truth as the Abrahamic faiths and the Old and New Testament. We know that Brahman is the particulars of Christianity. Abraham (Brahma) not to be confused with Brahman. Brahman according to the East is the self created being that created this World. Brahma is the first created being or Creator God who has Source in Brahman. This is allegorized as Abraham and Sara or Saraswati being the the Father of the Israelites the chosen people of God. We know that in astro physiology Brahma is the Cerebrum or Abraham Cerebrum or Sarah and Abraham the two hemispheres of the Brain or Hiram Abiff the Chief Architect of the Temple of Solomon. We have to read these all symbolically to know how it connects to us on an individual level.
When we dwell in silence and contemplate on our being by placing our awareness on the heart of our being [the Source of our thoughts} the Mind is then transcended and we experience the transcendental.
The body is likened unto a chariot. Amacrine of some sort with no consciousness of its own. The spirit that pervades everything and at the same time outside of everything or beyond it, utilizes the body or chariot as an interface into the physical dimension. The sprit can see without eyes, hear without ears, taste without a tongue but through us we experience these physical electrical sensations vi the body. The driver of the chariot si the an individualized spark of the supreme spirit Brahman. According pt Upanishads a particle of infinite consciousness becomes our finite consciousness or individualized being. We come here to make our individuality grow in the womb of creation. The divine mother nurtures the soul or individuality until it matures and then proceeds up the ladder to more transcendental realms of existence.
The supreme spirit resides as a witness within our heart, us the jiva or individualized arpel of this soul is the one who lives in the realm of darkness and light, good and evil, labor and rest. The supreme spirit works not an it is as declared in the Upanishads. There are two birds on a tree one enjoying the fruits and the other sits and watches. This is also in the Upanishads and diptecs the dual nature of our soul and spirit.
