Esoteric Rastafarianism:Bob Marley the Messenger of Jah

Bob Marley was a messenger of the Light—the effulgence of Love. He referred to the Creator as Jah, a term rooted in Rastafarian belief. Just as the Sun continually rises over the horizon, disappearing in winter only to return in spring, the Lord is ever-present and always coming. Poetically, the Supreme Creator continually sends forth divine light, intelligence, and life, incarnating this essence into beings. These souls have the unique ability to make the invisible visible, distilling esoteric and spiritual knowledge into forms that are accessible to the public on various levels.

Messengers of God appear to overthrow oppressors, heal the oppressed, and enlighten those seeking deeper wisdom. Bob Marley, an Aquarius, exemplified this role. In Rastafarian mythology, King Haile Selassie is regarded as a messenger or Avatar of God. Rastafarians also view cannabis as the fragrance the Lord prefers, citing biblical references. Bob Marley believed that cannabis, when used in a sacred way, helps to reveal the ego to higher consciousness. It strips away illusions, making it impossible to hide behind a mask, and allows one to see reality as it truly is.

As Marley famously said, “You’re running and you’re running and you’re running away, but you can’t run away from yourself.” In this way, God becomes the inner witness—the Eye of Providence, the Supreme Being—observing and guiding from within.

  1. Thank you Christopher. I believe as Bob Marley does concerning cannabis and approach it in the same way; as a Sacred Herb. My people are from Trinidad and Tobago ( my father ) and also Jamaica ( my mother ). I feel a deep connection with Bob Marley and the people of the West Indies. Great post.
