Chapter 1: An Overview

Welcome to the 12 Steps of the Alchemical Process course from Inner Mysteries. Today, we’re going to be going over the 12 steps of alchemy and showing how these 12 steps relate to:

The seasons
The 12 Zodiac signs
The 12 processes of alchemy
The alchemical lore

We’ll also explore how we go through these stages every year and on a grander cycle throughout our whole lives. We’ll separate the 12 months to the 12 Zodiac, the 12 cranial nerves, and the 12 alchemical processes of the human body.

Clearing Confusion in Alchemical Thought

In the ancient school of thought on alchemy, there has been some confusion. For example, some say that Dissolution is the second step, but we’re going to say that it is actually Coagulation. Upon further research, Dissolution should belong to Cancer, the Crab, and we’ll get to that point.

A Preview of Alchemical Terms

To begin, here’s a general preview of some alchemical terms:

Calcination: A purifying fire.
Separation: Separating the authentic from the conditioned.
Conjunction: The point of no return.

These are figurative terms representing the ideas that will be carried out in this course.

Aries: The Spring Equinox and the Beginning of the Alchemical Process

Aries (March 21st) in the Spring starts out with a bang. The Spring Equinox is the original New Year, marking the beginning of the alchemical process in Aries. If you’re watching this course in Spring, it’s a great time to start the alchemical process. You’ll learn how to go through the 12 Zodiac signs and apply it to inner alchemy from both a Jungian perspective and a Vedantic transmutation perspective.

The wisdom of the Ancients encoded these spiritual evolutionary processes in alchemical lore and ancient scriptures:

The Bible is alchemy, essentially.
The Upanishads are alchemy.
The whole system of this universe operates through alchemy.

God the Creator is considered the Master Alchemist, and within us, our divine spark is the Master Alchemist of our body, the original alchemical laboratory.

The Importance of Calcination

Calcination is believed to be one of the 12 vital processes required for the transformation of a substance. Alchemists distinguish two kinds of Calcination:

Actual Calcination: Brought about by actual fire, such as wood coals or other fuel, raised to a certain temperature.
Potential Calcination: Using the crude elements of the physical body, raising them to a certain temperature to begin the purification process.

The Spiritual Perspective:

Calcination involves activating our inner fire—not physically heating up but symbolically igniting our astral fire. This inner fire burns away the ego and purifies attachments to the animal nature of the body.

The Bible’s phrase “Be still and know that I am God” relates to this process:

I AM is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end.
Through Calcination, you confront the ego and initiate purification in your astral body.

Coagulation: Taurus and Crystallization

The second step, Coagulation, aligns with Taurus. This step is about crystallization and materialization, where spirit takes form in matter.

Crystallization: Spirit polarizes into matter, enabling form and materialization.
Realization: Meditating on the motto, “I HAVE,” reflects Taurus’ role in spiritual grounding.

In this process, the volatile and fixed elements become inseparable, and your state of awareness becomes fixed. Coagulation helps you prepare for further transformation.

For instance, when John the Baptist recognizes Jesus as “The Lamb of God,” the symbolism reflects Aries’ initiative and self-renewal. The wilderness, a realm of spiritual trials, represents the terrors faced by seekers. Henry James, an Aries, expresses this vividly: life flowers and fructifies from its deepest, most tragic roots.

Mark opens with the Christ archetype acting rebelliously against societal norms and inspiring others to follow him impulsively. This showcases the leap of faith and spiritual initiative necessary to undertake a path of inner transformation.

Where did these mistakes come from Where do you get to the point of lying about someone else When do you get to the point of coveting other people’s like you know it’s not right Also do you even want someone else’s position or power or path In the Bhagavad Gita it says don’t follow someone else’s path even if you feel like you’re better than them because it’s not your path

Jesus is the Jupiter Sun and Pisces figure in Aquarius But he also takes on the other forms as well as Aries as well because the stories convey this message in very Sometimes they use the literal symbol like the Lamb of God or the sandal strap or the Fisher of Men But then they sometimes use a more subtle symbol aspect like when they’re saying that- Remember that he’s kind of rebellious to his mom when she’s looking for him and he’s like: didn’t you know I was going to be here and then when they’re all dropping their fishing poles and dropping their shovels and stuff and just running after Jesus because they’ve just randomly seen him that is also aries impulsiveness

vanity of taurus all humanity has the impatience and wrath and um on stability of aries so they all have their different negative functions not just relating to whether or not you are that sign it doesn’t matter it just if you’re that sign you may have prominent aspects or even be able to notice it more you may be able to see it in yourself more in others but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you know and a Taurus doesn’t have a negative Leo aspect because all of us have to create the Floss for Stone by going through all 12 of these processes one one by one as we’ve done in the previous lectures to go through all of these lessons from the beginning in order to have just the cosmology and understanding as well as the certain initiatory practices that we’ve kind of combined and worked on towards this point um so that we can kind of catch up so that when when we’re going into the winter mysteries we can understand that entombment of the lord the christ and how that going into the underworld or the tomb that crucifixion and how that brings light in within us

The Ancient Religion of Astrotheology and the Secret of Light

In Ancient times mankind used the sky and the celestials as a reference for the seasons and the ebb and flow of the year and entire history. The ancients knew that heaven was a reflection of that which is within man’s mind and that man’s mind was a part and parcel of God’s mind, because of this they knew that the 12 zodiacs corresponded to the 12 systems in the body, the skeletal system, the digestive system, the cerebral spinal system, the nervous system and so on. With man being as the microcosm as the hermetics say , as above so below as within so without and that man is the measure of the universe , so man when studied is a book or a script that is played out. The script of the heaves is played out in the actions and events of man kind.

The Sun is the hero. In ancient Egypt, the Sun god was known as heru. Now we call it a hero. The hero of the story is always the sun personified. The sun is not just a physical body of energy but like mankind has a mind and spirit. The sun is the physical manifestation of the unseen power and omnipotence of God. In the bible, this spirit which is intelligent, personal, omnipotent, and all-knowing takes on the character of Jesus Christ. The life of Jesus is a personification of the Sun and its journey through the 12 zodiacs. The sun’s journey through the 12 zodiacs is the physical manifestation of unseen light and is a manual for mankind to read and understand the deepest goals of life.

In the natural world we can verify that the sun produces growth. The electrifying rays of the sun allow the plants to grow, and the trees to reach out to the heavens above. The solar energy transforms water by evaporating it into clouds, which then produces a new energy, a secondary force that we know as thunder and lightning. The water that pours down from the heavens hydrates and nourishes the plant and vegetable kingdom. A more subtle growth that occurs is the mental, and the intellectual growth. We see this mostly in the human kingdom. People are striving to become mentally more capable, learning trades and skills, language, and all aspirations to refine the intellect.

A certain degree of conscience looks at the sun and sees its physical effulgence only. The physical sun which grows plants and produces heat and light and creates the physical bodies, without it physical life would not exist. Using the the secret of analogies we can see the triune nature of the sun. The physical, the mental, and the spiritual. Behind the light and heat is love. The triune nature of the sun is also seen in the microcosm of man and his three fold nature of body, mind and spirit each one less dense than the other.
