In Ancient times mankind used the sky and the celestials as a reference for the seasons and the ebb and flow of the year and entire history. The ancients seers sand elevated beings who were in contact with the great spirit knew that the body was a microcosm of the macorosmom that means that it was an individuated parcel of a greater whole. That whole reflects its image through the material creation and we perceive it as the celestial heavens above. The world below being matter and the sky being the closest image we have of the spirit realm hence why most religions use heavens and the sky to represent the spiritual realm.
